TYPICAL WORKFLOW
What the job looks like from start to finish
Identify substrate, paint code, and coating system
Do not mix random primers, reducers, basecoats and clears.
- • Identify whether you are working over OEM finish, bare metal, body filler, plastic, or a failing repair.
- • Locate the vehicle paint code and confirm the actual color variant before ordering material.
- • Choose one compatible coating system and obtain its technical data sheets (TDS) and safety data sheets (SDS).
Verify before moving on: You have TDS/SDS for the primer/sealer, color, activator/reducer, and clear system you intend to use.
Repair and prepare the substrate
The coating can only be as stable and flat as the surface below it.
- • Wash and decontaminate before sanding so contaminants are not ground into the surface.
- • Remove failing material until the remaining edge is sound.
- • Use the coating manufacturer's grit progression and substrate-prep requirements.
Verify before moving on: Surface is clean, stable, uniformly prepared, and defects are corrected before color.
Set up the spray process from the product data
Mix ratio, reducer/activator, flash time, gun setup, temperature and film build are product-specific.
- • Read the TDS before mixing anything.
- • Set ventilation, masking, lighting, gun pressure/setup, overlap and test pattern for the selected product.
- • Use the stated mix ratio, pot life, flash window and coat count rather than a generic recipe.
Safety: Many automotive coatings and hardeners contain hazardous solvents and may contain isocyanates. A dust mask or ordinary cartridge respirator is not automatically adequate. Follow the coating SDS/TDS and applicable respiratory-protection, ventilation, ignition-control and PPE requirements; use a professional booth/provider when you cannot meet them.
Apply color/clear and inspect between stages
Correct defects before burying them under the next coating stage.
- • Use controlled overlap and distance according to the gun/product setup.
- • Respect flash windows.
- • Inspect coverage, orientation/mottle, contamination and runs before the next stage.
Verify before moving on: Coating is uniform and each stage is inside the manufacturer's recoat window.
Cure, inspect, and finish only when allowed
Sanding or polishing too early can damage a coating that looks dry but has not cured.
- • Follow stated cure time and temperature.
- • Inspect in strong neutral light.
- • Only sand/polish after the product allows it and with an appropriate defect-removal process.
Safety: Do not return a vehicle to service if masking removal, reassembly, coating cure, visibility, lighting, sensors, or safety-related components are incomplete.
Important limits and checks
• Paint code is a starting point, not a guaranteed color match; variants, fade and repair history matter.
• Exact mix ratios, flash/cure times, gun settings and PPE requirements come from the selected coating manufacturer's current TDS/SDS.
