Build a fence gate
A dimension-driven gate plan that starts from the actual opening, not a generic gate size.
WHAT THIS PROJECT COVERS
Measured opening: 48 in
Planned total side clearance: 1 in
Target gate width: 47 in
48 in gate height
Wood frame + fence facing
Tools to have ready
- Tape measure
- 4 ft level
- Square
- Saw appropriate for the material
- Drill/driver
- Clamps or temporary blocks
Materials and parts
- Gate frame material
- Fence-facing boards/pickets or panel
- Exterior-rated hinges sized for the gate
- Latch hardware
- Exterior-rated fasteners
- Diagonal anti-sag bracing or suitable gate-frame hardware
TYPICAL WORKFLOW
What the job looks like from start to finish
Measure the opening where the gate will actually live
Measure width at the top, middle, and bottom and check both posts for plumb.
- • Record the smallest usable opening width.
- • Check whether the hinge and latch posts are plumb and rigid.
- • Check ground slope and the clearance needed through the full swing.
Verify before moving on: The opening, swing path, and post condition are known before frame parts are cut.
Set the finished gate size
With 1 in total planned side clearance, HomeVerity calculates a 47 in gate width.
- • Treat this as starting geometry, not a substitute for the hinge/latch manufacturer's clearance requirements.
- • Adjust for hinge type, latch geometry, post movement, and finish thickness before cutting.
Verify before moving on: Your selected hinges/latch work with the final clearance plan.
Build a square gate frame
A sagging gate usually starts with a weak or out-of-square frame.
- • Cut the frame parts from verified dimensions.
- • Dry-fit on a flat surface.
- • Measure both diagonals and adjust until equal.
- • Add the selected diagonal brace or anti-sag hardware in the correct load direction for the design.
Verify before moving on: The frame remains square when lifted before the facing is installed.
Install the gate facing
Match the fence while preserving movement and ground clearance.
- • Lay out pickets/panel from a consistent reference edge.
- • Keep fasteners clear of hinge/latch mounting zones.
- • Trim or step the bottom only after checking the actual grade and swing.
Verify before moving on: Facing is secure and the gate stays square.
Hang, shim, and tune the gate
Support the gate at its intended finished position before fastening hinges.
- • Use blocks/shims to establish bottom and side clearances.
- • Fasten hinges into sound structural material using hardware suitable for the system.
- • Cycle the gate repeatedly before final latch placement.
Verify before moving on: Gate swings freely, stays aligned, latches reliably, and clears the ground through its whole arc.
Safety: A heavy gate can fall or crush fingers while being hung. Support it securely and get help for large/heavy assemblies.
Important limits and checks
• Gate dimensions depend on the real opening and hardware. Verify the hinge and latch manufacturer's requirements before final cutting or drilling.
• Posts must be structurally capable of supporting the gate; HomeVerity does not infer post footing capacity from gate dimensions alone.
MAKE IT YOUR PROJECT
The public guide is the overview. HomeVerity's workspace is where your details go.
Measurements, model details, symptoms, material choices, and other inputs can change the correct sequence or quantities. Enter those details in the interactive project rather than treating a generic default as exact.
